- Height: 52 to 59 inches tall
- Weight: 800 to 1300 pounds
- Small, flat, slightly dished head with wide-spread eyes and small ears
- Strong arched neck and well sprung body
- Broad chest and rump, sometimes with double croup
- Strong, well tapered legs with relatively large, hard hooves
- Free and easy movement with a long stride
- Sleek coat, solid or with dappling
- Chestnut body color, varying from honey blonde to chocolate
- Full tail, thick mane which may be double, and heavy forelock
- Tail and mane color ranges from pure white to flaxen
